Reiki: What It Really Is and How It Can Help You

When most people hear the word Reiki, they either think “woo-woo trend” or “some mysterious energy thing I don’t really get.”Here’s the truth: Reiki is neither a fad nor a mystery, it’s a simple, powerful way to calm your mind, release what’s weighing you down, and bring your whole system back into balance.

I’ve seen clients walk in stressed, scattered, or in pain, and leave lighter, calmer, and clearer. Reiki is one of those practices you don’t just read about, you actually feel the difference in your body and mind.

So, what actually happens in Reiki?

Reiki comes from Japan and literally translates to “universal life force energy.” Think of it as tapping into the energy that already flows through you, the stuff that keeps you alive, moving, and connected.

In a session, you’ll stay fully clothed, lie down, and simply let yourself relax. I’ll place my hands gently on or above your body, and that’s it, no pressure, no awkwardness. Most people feel warmth, tingles, or a wave of calm they didn’t even know they needed.

The Benefits You Can Expect

Stress melts away – You know that “always on edge” feeling? Reiki helps your nervous system switch gears so you can actually rest and breathe again.

Eases aches and tension – From chronic pain to that knot in your shoulders you’ve been ignoring, Reiki can help your body release and soften.

Emotional balance – Anxiety, low mood, grief, Reiki has a way of clearing the heaviness so you feel lighter and more grounded.

Clarity & calm – Many people say it helps them make clearer decisions and reconnect with what really matters.

Works alongside other care – Reiki doesn’t replace your doctor or therapist, but it beautifully supports your healing journey.

The Science Bit (My Take)

A lot of people ask me, “But how does Reiki actually work?” And honestly, it’s a fair question. Here’s how I explain it:

Energy Fields

Everything living gives off energy, you can feel it when you walk into a room and instantly sense the vibe, or when someone’s mood affects your own. That’s your energy field at play. When life piles on stress, illness, or emotional baggage, that flow gets a bit tangled. Reiki is like pressing the reset button, gently guiding your system back into balance.

What the Research Shows

Science is still catching up, but there’s already some interesting evidence. Studies show Reiki can lower stress, ease anxiety, and even help with pain. I’ve seen the same in my own sessions, clients walk out looking lighter, breathing easier, and often saying, “Wow, I didn’t realise how much I needed that.”

And the Placebo Thing

Some people say it’s “just placebo.” My response? Even if belief is part of it, so what? If you leave feeling calmer, clearer, and more yourself, that’s real. Sometimes the mind and body just need permission to switch off and heal, and Reiki gives you that.

What to Expect in Your First Session

We’ll start with a quick chat so I understand what’s going on for you, whether that’s stress, physical pain, or just feeling stuck. Then you’ll get comfy, close your eyes, and let the rest unfold.

The room will be calm, soft lighting, gentle music, maybe some aromatherapy, so you can fully switch off. Sessions usually last around 60 minutes, and afterwards, you’ll have a chance to share anything that came up for you. Many clients like to journal afterwards to capture insights or shifts they notice.

Why Reiki Might Be Exactly What You Need

Life is busy, messy, and sometimes heavy. Reiki gives you a pause button, a safe space where your body and mind can reset. If you’re craving less stress, more balance, and a sense of calm that actually lasts beyond the session, Reiki is worth trying.

Ready to experience it for yourself?

Instead of just reading about it, book a session and see how you feel afterwards. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve tried Reiki before, each session is unique, tailored to what you need in that moment.

Your calm, clarity, and healing are waiting.
